The Monarch’s Bayou Lifeline
Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is the wetland sister of Butterfly Milkweed — equally essential to monarch butterflies as a host plant, but built for Louisiana’s moist soils, bayou edges, and rain gardens. Its deep rose-pink blooms are stunning in summer and irresistible to monarchs, swallowtails, and native bees. Traiteurs used the roots in small doses for respiratory and rheumatic complaints, following the careful traditions of plant medicine passed down through generations.
