Sauge — The Herb That Clears What Needs Clearing
Sage (Salvia officinalis) has been burned, brewed, and bundled across cultures for thousands of years — and in the Cajun Traiteur tradition, it was no different. Sauge was the herb you reached for when a space needed clearing, when illness had settled into a home, or when something needed to be released. Its smoke was thick and purposeful. Its presence in the garden was a statement: this is a healing place.
Medicinal Properties
- Antimicrobial & antifungal — thujone, camphor, and rosmarinic acid strongly inhibit bacterial and fungal growth
- Smoke cleansing — burned to clear illness, pathogens, and stagnant energy from a space
- Sore throat & oral health — astringent and antimicrobial; gargled as a tea for throat infections and gum inflammation
- Digestive support — carminative; relieves bloating, gas, and sluggish digestion
- Hormonal support — traditionally used to reduce excessive sweating and support menopausal transitions
- Culinary medicine — a cornerstone of Cajun and Creole cooking; flavor and function in one leaf

- Perennial herb; grows 1–2 ft in Louisiana
- Full sun, excellent drainage; needs good airflow in Louisiana humidity
