Lavande — The Scent of Calm in a Restless World

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) was the herb the Cajun Traiteur gave to someone who couldn’t sleep, couldn’t settle, couldn’t let go of what was weighing on them. It was tucked into pillows, added to bath washes, and used in salves for burns and skin irritation. Its scent alone was considered medicine — a signal to the nervous system that it was safe to rest.

Medicinal Properties

  • Calming & anxiolytic — linalool and linalyl acetate act on GABA receptors to reduce anxiety without sedation
  • Sleep support — inhaled or applied topically; promotes deeper, more restful sleep
  • Antimicrobial — essential oils inhibit bacterial and fungal growth on skin and wounds
  • Wound healing & burn relief — anti-inflammatory and analgesic; speeds tissue repair
  • Analgesic — topical pain relief for headaches, muscle tension, and minor burns
  • Aromatic medicine — scent alone calms the nervous system; used in pillows, baths, and sachets

Garden Performance

  • Perennial herb; grows 1–3 ft in Louisiana with proper drainage
  • Full sun, excellent drainage, and good airflow essential
  • Requires raised bed or sandy soil in Louisiana’s humid climate
  • Silver-purple flower spikes bloom prolifically in spring
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
  • Plant near a path — let the scent do its work every time you pass

  • Small — 4" pot ($18.00) — 2.5 lbs
  • Medium — 1 gallon ($34.29) — 6.5 lbs
  • Large — 3 gallon ($58.00) — 9.0 lbs
