Gros Bec — Yellow-Crowned Night Heron, Hunting the Hatch
Real Time Cajun Wildlife Photography | Big Mamou Enterprises | Instant Digital Download | $60
Before the sun clears the cypress tops, the Gros Bec is already at work. Still as driftwood. Eyes locked on the water. Waiting for the hatch to rise.
This image was captured on Bayou Self in the heart of Louisiana’s wetlands — a place where the swamp breathes on its own schedule and the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron has hunted the same way for thousands of years. Patient. Ancient. Perfectly tuned to the rhythm of the bayou.
About the Gros Bec — Yellow-Crowned Night Heron
The Yellow-Crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is one of Louisiana’s most iconic wading birds — known locally throughout Cajun country as the Gros Bec (French for “big beak”). Stocky, patient, and built for the bayou, the Gros Bec is a specialist predator of crustaceans — particularly crawfish and fiddler crabs — making it a fixture of Louisiana’s coastal marshes, swamps, and slow-moving bayous. Unlike most herons that hunt fish, the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron is uniquely adapted to hunt the hatch — the brief, electric window when insects and crustaceans rise to the surface and the heron strikes with precision. It is a year-round resident of coastal Louisiana and one of the most photographed birds in the state’s wetland ecosystems.
About Bayou Self
Bayou Self is a waterway in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana — a slow, dark bayou winding through the coastal marshes of South Louisiana. It is part of the vast wetland ecosystem that defines the Louisiana Gulf Coast — home to alligators, herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, and the full spectrum of Louisiana’s native wildlife. For generations, Cajun families have fished, trapped, and lived along its banks. Bayou Self is one of the locations documented by Real Time Cajun, the wildlife photography and storytelling brand of Big Mamou Enterprises.
