Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus)
One of the most spectacular native flowering trees of the American South, Fringe Tree erupts each spring in cascading white flower clusters so delicate they appear to float like mist above the branches. A Louisiana native of stream banks and woodland edges, it is equally at home in the cultivated garden — a four-season plant with spring bloom, summer fruit, golden fall color, and sculptural winter form.

- Bloom Time: March–May

Ecological Role
Fringe Tree is a critical early-season nectar source for native bees and butterflies. Its blue-black drupes ripen in late summer and are consumed by over 20 species of birds including mockingbirds, catbirds, and wood thrushes. It supports specialist native bee species and is a host plant for several sphinx moths.
In the Cajun Heritage Garden
Part of the Jardin — Heritage Garden collection at Big Mamou Enterprises, Fringe Tree is a plant of extraordinary beauty and ecological generosity — a living landmark for any Louisiana landscape.
