Échinacée — The Herb That Wakes the Body Up to Fight
Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) is the herb the Cajun Traiteur reached for at the first sign of illness — the scratchy throat, the heavy head, the feeling that something was coming. It was used to activate the body's own defenses, shorten the duration of colds and flu, and support wound healing when infection was a concern.
Medicinal Properties
- Immune activation — polysaccharides and alkylamides stimulate white blood cell production and activate macrophages
- Cold & flu support — most effective at onset of illness, used in short targeted courses
- Wound healing — anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial when applied topically
- Lymphatic support — traditionally used to move stagnant lymph and clear infection
- Roots, leaves, and flowers are all medicinal
Garden Performance
- Perennial herb; grows 2–4 ft in Louisiana
- Full sun; well-drained soil; drought-tolerant once established
- Large purple coneflowers bloom midsummer through fall
- Attracts butterflies, bees, and goldfinches (seed heads)
- Returns reliably each year, growing stronger with each season
Available Pot Sizes
- Small — 4" pot ($18.00) — 2.5 lbs
- Medium — 1 gallon ($34.29) — 6.5 lbs
- Large — 3 gallon ($58.00) — 9.0 lbs
