Copper Iris (Iris fulva)
The Copper Iris is Louisiana’s most distinctive native iris — the only iris in the world with true copper-red to brick-red flowers, a color found nowhere else in the genus. A plant of bayou margins, swamp edges, and slow-moving waterways, it is one of the parent species of the celebrated Louisiana Iris hybrids and a living symbol of the state’s unique botanical heritage.

- USDA Hardiness Zones: 4–9
- Mature Size: 2–3 feet tall
- Bloom Time: April–May

- Soil: Wet to moist; tolerates standing water and heavy clay; ideal for pond margins and rain gardens
Cultural Significance
Copper Iris is one of the five species of Louisiana Iris — a group of native irises unique to the Gulf South that have been hybridized into thousands of named cultivars celebrated worldwide. The wild species retains a raw, bayou beauty that no hybrid can replicate. It was used by Indigenous peoples of the Gulf South for fiber and as a medicinal plant.
Ecological Role
Copper Iris is pollinated by long-tongued bees and hummingbirds. Its seeds are dispersed by water, spreading naturally along bayou corridors. It provides cover for frogs, crawfish, and small fish in shallow water margins.
