The Last Bloom of the Bayou Season
Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) earns its name from the soft, hazy clouds of powder-blue flowers it produces in late summer and fall — one of the last great pollinator blooms of the Louisiana season. Monarchs migrating south stop to feed on it in droves. Folk healers used it as a wash for skin irritations and as a tea for fevers. It spreads gently by rhizome, naturalizing into drifts of misty blue that transform a garden’s late-season palette.
- Light: Full sun to part shade
- Evergreen: No
- Maintenance: Low
When everything else is fading, Blue Mistflower is just getting started. Plant it for the monarchs. Keep it for the magic.
