The Story
I was born on Bayou Self in Louisiana —
where the water remembers everything
and the land carries your family name
long after you're gone.

My name is Cazan da Cadien. The bayou I grew up on bears my family name. That's not a metaphor — it's a deed, a lineage, a living thing. The Self family and Bayou Self have been woven together for generations, the way Spanish moss weaves itself into cypress trees. You can't tell where one ends and the other begins.

I come from a people called the Cadiens — the Acadians who found their way to the Louisiana wetlands and built a world out of ingenuity, faith, music, and fire. A world that smells like dark roux on a cold morning and sounds like a fiddle cutting through still evening air.

But I almost lost it all before I ever had it.

When I was small, my mother's tongue — the Cajun French my grandparents breathed and dreamed in — was taken from me. Banned. The way things were taken from a lot of Cajun children in those years. My grandparents didn't speak a word of English. I didn't speak enough French. Somewhere in that gap, a little girl felt lost between two worlds, carrying a mixed vocabulary and a heavy anxiety into her first grade classroom.

Then a wise Cadien man saw the struggle in me. He looked at that little girl and gave her something no classroom ever could. He healed me in one phrase — and I have carried it my whole life:

"You don't have to speak Cadien to be.
You have to live to be."

— A Wise Cadien, Bayou Self, Louisiana

Those words set me free. They told me that identity isn't locked inside a language — it lives in the cooking, the stories, the music, the land, the people, the way you love your family and your neighbors and your bayou. I didn't need perfect French. I needed to live it. And I have been living it ever since.

I grew up learning from everything around me. The Bible first — always. Then the masters: Zig Ziglar taught me how to serve people into success. Napoleon Hill taught me the power of a definite purpose. But the wisdom? The wisdom is mine. Earned on this bayou. Shaped by these waters. Tested by real life.

I built CajunInABox.com to bring authentic Cadien flavors and ingredients to kitchens everywhere. I built BigMamouEnterprises.com as the enterprise that holds it all together. And I built RealtimeCajun.com because the world deserves to experience this culture — not a version of it, not a tourist's snapshot of it — the real, breathing, living thing.

It used to be about what's around the next bend in the bayou.
Now it's about terabytes.

The curiosity never changed. The hunger never changed. What changed is the reach. Today I share sights, sounds, flavors, and ingredients with people who've never set foot in Louisiana — and I watch something light up in them that looks a lot like what that wise Cadien lit up in me.

This is Real Time Cajun. Come sit a while. The roux is on.
